Lyonel in the news : Article in MStar - The Star Paper 2Oct 2011

Lyonel waves Jalur Gemilang(Malaysia Flag) in North Korea
Lyonel Tan made his mark in history when he won the bronze medal at the 17th ITF Tae Kwon Do World Championship in Pyong Yang, North Korea recently.
The young lad, born in Petaling Jaya, Selangor lost in the semi finals against the hosting country. He had hoped to meet the North Koreans in the finals, nevertheless he is proud of his achievement and the opportunity to face them, a team that many competitors feared.
"North Korean is one of the strongest team. My target was to meet them in the finals, however that hope short-lived as I had to fight them in an earlier round. But at least I had the opportunity to step on the podium & wave our Malaysia flag proudly! I was very excited and it elevated my motivation to work harder after this. " he says after participating in the 4th Degree Individual Pattern Category.
According to Lyonel, eventhough we didnt manage to bag the Gold medal at the Championship, that was participated by more than 80 countries, he is confident that this is the first step in fullfiling his dreams to be the Champion at the 2013 World Championship in Bulgaria.
"I dream of being the champion in 2 years time. Eventhough there`s still a lot of time,I have a lot more to learn and improve. I will also try to join a few more competitions before that,as a test to measure my performance."
"Discipline is very important if we want to succeed in this event. Apart from coaching Tae Kwon Do to kids and adults, I have to keep training a in order to increase my skills." he said as he would also be taking part in the Nationals in December.
Lyonel have been actively involve in Tae Kwon Do since he was 9 and at the age of 13, he already started taking part in the state & national competitions.
"My dad (Master Tan Eng Kiat) is the national coach, and we as a family which includes my mum, sister & relatives are actively involved in this sport. In a way, Tae Kwon Do has taught me a lot on how to get through my everyday life. It does not only build my confidence, its also a technique of self defense that I can apply in case of any attacks."
"One of the other reasons, is that it instill the spirit of co-operation among us and most importantly it keeps my body & mind healthy. My participation in the national & international arena has also given me the advantage to be able to share my experience & knowledge with the other team members and young athletes."
As a Senior atlet in the in event, Lyonel said that we have many athletes in Malaysia that has a lot of potential, but faces the problem of not being exposed to the international standard.
"We have a lot of young athlete that has their own skills and outstanding talent. But they face a lack of international exposure due to financial issues. We hope that more parties would be willing to support and help us expand Tae Kwon Do."
"Without sponsorship it is difficult or us to participate in overseas event and this partly affects an athlete`s development. I would like to thank ChillaCup for the sponsorship recently. With this we hope many more parties would be willing to help and work together to lift the spirit of sports in our country." he said.

To all Vision TKD students near and far, I have the utmost honour, privilege and pride, and with extreme happiness to announce to all that our instructor, the beloved Master Tan Eng Kiat, has been promoted to 8th Dan on 7th Sept 2011 at the 17th World TKD Championship at Pyongyang, North Korea He shall be addressed as Senior Master effective from today. Senior Master Tan EK has fittingly and rightfully been accorded his promotion in a place no other than in Pyongyang, which he will truly treasure. His promotion has again been another long and bitter struggle, a suffering only which he himself knows, due to man-made circumstances. We, your students, are very happy for you and wish you HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS. As a student, I have seen all the nonsense that Senior Master Tan EK has to endure in his TKD life and I hope all of us have the tenacity, determination, courage, forbearance, patience, etc etc to emulate you, Senior Master Tan EK. Sir, your visit to the late General Choi Hong Hi`s final resting place on the 8th Sept 2011 will definitely have a more profound meaning for you and the loss of the great Founder will be deeply felt. Sir, CONGRATULATIONS again. "THE TRUTH SHALL PREVAIL" and "BE GENEROUS" are proven statements indeed.
Cheang Kam Yin - Vision Malaysia
