TAEKWON-DO has given me a better outlook in my studies as well as in the
sports arena.
When I was young, I used to dread studying and even playing games or getting
involved in any sport. At the age of 12, things changed and I began to realise that
the motto "work hard and play hard" was good for me.
From then onwards, I had to balance my time between studies and practising
taekwondo, which is the only sport I have developed an interest in.
Taekwondo has instilled in me the qualities of discipline, self- reliance, self-
confidence, motivation and tolerance. All these qualities have helped me in my
achievements so far in studies and sports.
Currently, I manage my time between studying at the HELP University College,
training in taekwondo as well as conducting training for HELP students.
As I am still keen in keeping myself physically fi t for taekwondo competitions
locally or abroad, I have to maintain a regular training programme and at the same
time not neglect my studies. I am a 2nd year Finance & Accounting Degree student.
My ambition is to obtain a ACCA degree as well as to be a world champion in
taekwondo.
In July 2005, with fi nancial support from HELP University, I represented Malaysia
and won in the 14th World Championship which was held in Brisbane, Australia.
With a very tight daily schedule, I have to manage my time very well so that I have
enough time to do everything that I enjoy doing.
From Monday to Friday, I attend lectures in the mornings.
Once a week, I conduct taekwondo training at the HELP University College,
where I am also the president of the taekwondo club.
During the afternoons, I assist my dad in some taekwondo training centres in Kuala Lumpur. I am lucky to be able to follow my dad who is a professional instructor. He
has given me a lot of good exposure and proper guidance.
In the evenings, till about 10pm, I go jogging or do muscle toning workouts along
with taekwondo patterns, sparring techniques or self-defence training. I usually train
at my dad's centre in Petaling Jaya.
I have also started another training class at the Millenium Court in Petaling Jaya
where many students from various colleges and universities reside. I want to share
my knowledge and skills of taekwondo with these students
The encouragement that I get from my parents and the desire to strive for the best
always, keeps me going forward.
Although I have a rather busy schedule, I can still squeeze in an occasional
"power nap" in the early evenings. they really help!
It takes a lot of discipline to maintain such a routine timetable, and I know I have to
do it to reach my goal, that is to excel in both studies and sports.
Lyonel Tan is a second year Finance & Accounting student in HELP University
College. He is also a national taekwondo exponent and represented Malaysia at
the 14th World Championships in Brisbane, Australia.
